JOB SUMMARY
This position operates heavy equipment in the repair and maintenance of City cart paths, storm water ditches, and other infrastructure.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Operates heavy equipment in the maintenance and repair of City cart paths and in the maintenance of the storm water system; operates an asphalt spreader, loader, skid steer, backhoe, road grader, dump truck, excavator, street sweeper, etc.
- Unloads and loads equipment for transport.
- Installs and removes storm pipes; repairs potholes, trenches, and curbs; digs trenches for the installation of pipes; and cleans debris and trash out of storm sewers, catch basins, and drains.
- Assists in masonry work, such as building headwalls, retaining walls, and catch basins. Grades; prepares forms; pours and finishes concrete in the installation of curbs and handicap access ramps.
- Operates a variety of hand and power tools, including a chainsaw, weed eater, back-pack blower, etc.
- Assists in traffic control at work sites.
- Performs pre- and post-trip vehicle and equipment inspections; ensures vehicle and equipment maintenance and cleaning; and reports mechanical or other defects to Crew Leader or Supervisor.
- Performs preventative maintenance on equipment.
- Cuts and prunes trees; trims shrubbery; removes brush; and sweeps streets.
- Installs roads signs and street markings.
- Maintains detention ponds.
- Grades and pours concrete.
- Locates underground utilities.
- Responds to after-hours and weather-related emergencies.
- Must attend specialized training, including safety training, as required by management.
- Performs related duties as assigned by supervisor.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
- Knowledge of the techniques, equipment, and supplies used in cart path and drainage system construction and maintenance.
- Knowledge of City and departmental safety policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of the geography of the City, including street names and locations.
- Knowledge of safe work policies and procedures.
- Skill in prioritizing and organizing work.
- Skill in the operation and maintenance of specialized equipment, tools and machinery, including an excavator, loader, bulldozer, backhoe, street sweeper, and dump truck.
- Skill in the use of hand and power tools.
- Skill in interpersonal relations.
- Skill in oral communication.
- Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively in a workplace of dignity and respect.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include traffic laws, the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices, work safety policies, OSHA requirements, and City policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
- The work consists of related equipment operation duties. Inclement weather and heavy traffic contribute to the complexity of the position.
- The purpose of this position is to operate heavy equipment in the maintenance of City cart paths, and drainage systems. Successful performance contributes to the provision of a safe and well-maintained City infrastructure.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguishes between shades of color.
- The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
This position may have functional supervision over assigned personnel.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- 1-2 years in a similar role typically gained through an apprenticeship or internship.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a State of Georgia Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B or Non-Commercial Driver’s License Class F.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a Georgia Department of Transportation Flagging Certificate.
