ENTRY SALARY:  $23.43 per hour, plus benefits

JOB SUMMARY:   This position is responsible for supervising inmates at the county jail. Processes and performs initial and periodic searches of inmates and housing area. Ensures the safety of facility, inmates, staff, and visitors. Patrols areas of the jail in accordance with set schedules; monitors inmate health and wellbeing; supervises inmate consumption of meals, personal hygiene, and related activities; ensures compliance with rules and regulations. Supervises and controls inmate behavior during day-to-day operations; restrains inmates as required. Communicates effectively with other Detention Officers, staff, and inmates; advises inmates concerning institution procedures, rules, and regulations. Maintains assigned weapon, equipment, and uniform in functional condition as prescribed by department policy. Receives and processes inmates into custody; searches inmates; takes charge of inmate personal property. Transports inmates to medical, court, and other appointments. Supervises and directs the work of inmate workers both inside and outside the facility; transports inmate work details; ensure the proper care and maintenance of jail facilities. Utilizes the inmate classification system to separate inmates based on physical, mental, and behavioral histories; utilizes appropriate judgement in the handling of special needs situations. Utilizes the records management system to enter and maintain records, visits, and shift logs. Processes incoming and outgoing mail for contraband. Answers telephone calls and assists the public and other law enforcement agencies; provides information and assistance. Maintains and updates GCIC records. Investigates crimes and critical incidents such as suicide, suicide attempts, disciplinary infractions, assaults, sexual misconduct, or other criminal acts. Enacts emergency procedures in the event of riot, escape, or other critical incidents; serves as a member of the Emergency Response Team. Performs related duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to a high school diploma. Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years’ experience or service. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the Peace Officer Standards and Training Council for the State of Georgia.
