The City of Commerce is currently hiring for the positino of Pipefitter I & II

JOB SUMMARY

 

Assist with the operation and maintenance of the water and sewer systems. Installs, repairs, and maintains water and sewer lines ensuring service to the customers is uninterrupted or restored as soon as possible 

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Responds to all reports of water line, water meter, water main, or sewer line breaks; locates breaks and lines prior to digging; finds the shut-off valves by using an m-scope and valve locator and cuts off the service before repairs begin.   
     
  • Cuts and fits pipes above or below ground to specifications necessary to install or repair water or sewer lines; assembles the pipe system; operates the cutting machine or cutting tools; installs or replaces manholes, valves, tees, bends and crosses.
     
  • Raises, lowers, or moves water and sewer lines as needed when a road is widened or a right-of-way is expanded; operates a boring machine to run lines under roadways.
     
  • Cleans around fire hydrants; greases all fittings and fills them with oil; tests hydrant flow to assure there are no blockages and adequate pressure is available; pumps water out of ditches and other places where it may have settled after a break or repairs; uses a sewer jet to clean sewer lines.
     
  • Redirects traffic away from the location of a main break; places signs and cones for motorists and may flag traffic away from trouble spots.

 

  •  Employee subject to work scheduled weekend, holiday, or after hours standby duty.

 

  • Employee subject to recall to duty in cases of emergency.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Minimum Education and Experience:

High School diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Licenses or Certifications:

Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

 

DOT Certified Flagger (within 6 months from date of hire)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:   

 

  • Knowledge of the standard materials, tools, equipment, and methods used in water and sewer installation, repair and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures pertaining to water and sewer distribution systems maintenance.
  • Knowledge of meters, valves, taps, sewer pump stations, and elevated water tank operations.
  • Skill in standard water and sewer installation, repair and maintenance, tools and equipment such as pipe threading machines, and boring machines.
  • Skill in using tools such as jackhammers, pipe locators, pipe cutters, and various hand tools.
  • Skill in following instructions.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans and blueprints.
  • Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.

 

The above position qualifies for promotion to Utility Technician I upon attainment of Class A Commercial Driver's License.
 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must handle continuous outdoor activity, frequent standing, sitting, walking, squatting, bending, twisting upper body, climbing, exposure to extreme heat, cold, noise, mechanical hazards, fume/odor hazards, toxic waste/material hazards. Must be able to work in confined spaces. Walk and work on slippery and uneven surfaces. Manual dexterity sufficient to grasp, hold objects and tools with full range of motion in wrists and arms. Hearing sufficient to understand conversations, both in person and on the telephone. Must be able to climb ladders, crawl across pipelines, lift or carry 50 pounds while climbing ladders or steep banks. Ability to lift and carry objects up to 80 pounds. Occasionally will be required to lift manhole covers weighing in excess of 50 pounds several times a day. 

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is typically performed outdoors, where the employee may be exposed to dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and occasional inclement weather. The work requires the use of safety devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
