JOB SUMMARY

The Courtroom Bailiff for the Municipal Court is responsible for maintaining order and security in the courtroom, ensuring everyone's safety, and supporting the Judge and court staff during court proceedings. The role requires strong observation skills, quick decision-making under pressure, and a professional, courteous attitude.

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Maintain order and decorum in the courtroom at all times.
  •  Ensure only authorized personnel are present in designated areas.
  • Monitor the behavior of individuals in the courtroom and assist law enforcement in addressing disruptive conduct according to established procedures and judicial directives.
  • Respond promptly and appropriately to security incidents or emergencies.
  • Assist in the enforcement of court rules and regulations.
  • Serves as custodian of all Municipal Court records in accordance with federal and state regulations and with city and department policies and procedures.
  • Assist with the management of case files and court documents.
  • Relay messages between the Judge, Solicitor, Probation, attorneys, and other court personnel.
  •  Escort defendants and other individuals as directed by the Judge or court staff.
  •  Ensure the timely movement of individuals in and out of the courtroom.
  • Assist with the seating arrangements of court participants.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Judge or Court Administrator to facilitate efficient court operations.
  • Be knowledgeable of and follow established safety and emergency procedures.
  • Assist in the evacuation of the courtroom and building in emergency situations.
  • Contact appropriate law enforcement or emergency personnel when necessary. Coordinates activities with other agencies and departments; works to resolve court-related issues and problems.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with the judge, court staff, attorneys, litigants, and the public.
  • Ability to maintain a calm and professional demeanor in potentially tense or confrontational situations.
  • Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
  •  Provide clear and concise instructions to individuals in the courtroom.
  • Answer inquiries from the public in a courteous and informative manner, within the scope of their responsibilities.
  • Maintain confidentiality of court proceedings and sensitive information pursuant to state and local directives including GCIC rules regarding the handling of criminal histories.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • The work environment is primarily a courtroom, with court sessions held on Thursdays—both morning and afternoon—totaling about 42–45 days per year. The noise level is generally moderate, and the employee may encounter emotionally charged individuals.
