The City of Fairburn has the following positions available:


                                                         $9.21 per hour

STATUS:               Part-time seasonal, up to 30 hours per week


BENEFITS:          There are no group benefits associated with this position


SCHEDULE:        Varies, hours are Monday – Sunday, 9:00 am – 6:00 pm


POSITION SUMMARY:  The incumbent performs assigned lifeguard duties, swim-lesson instructor, pool, and facility maintenance.  The Incumbent assures the safety of the public and administers first aid as needed.  Report to the Aquatics Facility Supervisor any incidents, potential hazards or patron problems which may hinder the safe and effective operations of the pool. 




  • Practice preventative lifeguard measures and perform water rescues.
  • Explain all pool rules and regulations as set forth by the City of Fairburn.
  • Responsible for the cleanliness of the pool and facility, as assigned.
  • Responsible for removing clutter, trash, and all foreign objects in and around the pool area.
  • Responsible for vacuuming, sweeping, washing, moping, and disinfecting the pool and facility, as needed.
  • Perform first-aid care for patrons as needed and complete accident reports.
  • Maintain required certifications and participate in all required in-service training sessions.
  • Perform other related duties, as assigned.




  • One (1) to two (2) years Lifeguard/Instructor experience.
  • Possess valid Georgia driver’s license.
  • Satisfactory background screening.




  • Certification as American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (LGI).
  • Certification in CPR and First Aid required.
  • AED (Automated External Defibrillator)










  • Knowledge of swimming pool rules and regulations.
  • Skill to administer first-aid care to patrons as needed and complete accident reports.
  • Skill in effective communications with the public.
  • Ability to act quickly and efficiently in life-threatening situations.
  • Ability to practice preventative lifeguard measures and perform water rescues.
  • Ability to enforce all pool rules and regulations as set forth by the City of Fairburn.
  • Ability to maintain cleanliness of the pool and facility.


Supervisory Controls: The incumbent receives work assignments from the Aquatics Facility Supervisor.


Guidelines: Guidelines include, in addition to adherence to City Personnel Policy, Federal, State, and local laws, regulations, policies, procedures and standards pertaining to Parks and Recreation.


Complexity:  Work requires analysis and judgment in accomplishing diversified duties. Work requires the exercise of independent thinking within the limits of guidelines, policies, standards, and precedents.


Scope and Effect:  The purpose of this position is to perform duties to assure safe and efficient lifeguard/instructor duties are performed.


Personal Contacts:  Contacts are typically with coworkers, the public, city employees, elected officials, and other local governmental officials.


Purpose of Contacts:  Contacts are typically for providing lifeguard/instructor services.


Physical Demands:  The incumbent is regularly required to perform duties that require manual dexterity involved with swimming and instruction of the same, in addition to physical demands of lifeguard duties.  Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds.


Work Environment:  The work is typically performed outdoors at the pool facility or in an office for associated administrative functions.


Supervisory and Management Responsibility:  None.
