This position is responsible for performing routine and extensive unskilled work assignments associated with grounds maintenance of the city parks, athletic fields, and golf course.  Operates mowing tractors, riding mowers and push mowers, trimmers, edgers and blowers.  Mows and cleans parks, athletic fields and golf course; marks out boundaries on sports fields and golf course.  Waters, fertilizes and aerates.  Plants grass, flowers, trees and shrubs; prunes shrubs and trees to shape and improve growth.  Performs weed control tasks; sprays lawns, trees and shrubs with fertilizers and insecticides.  Rakes leaves, cleans, and sweeps litter.  Maintains responsibility for assigned grounds maintenance equipment and vehicle;  performs pre-trip inspections to equipment; checks brakes, lights, hoses, belts, air pressure, fluid levels, etc.; reports any equipment repair or maintenance needs to immediate supervisor.  Cleans and washes equipment.  May perform minor repairs and maintenance procedures on equipment utilized in grounds maintenance.  May perform routine laboring and maintenance duties when grounds keeping work has been completed.  Responds to citizen questions and comments pertaining to work related matters.  Performs related duties. 

 

Qualifications

Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations. Possession a valid Georgia driver’s license. Knowledge and skill in the basic methods, techniques, materials, tools and equipment used in grounds maintenance activities. Knowledge of mowing and shrub, hedge and tree pruning procedures and techniques. Knowledge of city and departmental policies associated with the rules, regulations and operating procedures related to the maintenance of grounds areas, facilities and equipment. Knowledge of safe working methods and procedures. Skill in safely operating a variety of heavy-duty grounds maintenance equipment. Skill in performing heavy manual labor functions related to grounds maintenance. Skill in communicating effectively with others.

Miscellaneous Information

Work is performed outdoors while standing, stooping, bending, crouching or walking. Lift light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity and distinguishes between shades of color. Exposure to cold or inclement weather, noise, dust, dirt, grease and machinery with moving parts. Work requires the use of protective devices such as goggles or gloves.
