The City of Milton is looking for a highly qualified individual to serve as our Building Inspector. The City is reorganizing the Building Inspection and Plan Review function and moving from an outsourced service delivery model to bringing those responsibilities in-house.

The Building Inspector performs inspections of commercial structures and residential, single-family detached structures for compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.  

Typical duties include:

  • Performing daily field inspections of residential, commercial, and public facility construction projects; identifying code deficiencies, hazardous conditions, structural failures, or improper uses; verifying field conditions for compliance with approved plans, specifications, engineered drawings, permit requirements, and conditions of plan approval; recommending corrective actions; reporting violations and variations from codes/plans.
  • Routing scheduled inspections daily for efficiency and to accommodate time requests.
  • Interacting with the public and explaining technical information to both technically and non-technically trained individuals.
  • Performing various administrative tasks in support of daily operations of the department; notifying utility companies of approval for service; maintaining records of approval; performing routine computer data entry.
  • Maintaining accurate records to document inspections, test results, and additional details pertaining to inspections.
  • Providing written correction comments with code references when inspections are failed or partially approved.
  • Monitoring construction activity within the community for work in progress that is not under permit.
  • Assisting with site inspections on water systems, roads, streets, sidewalks, curb and gutters, erosion control measures, and related infrastructure systems.
  • Maintaining a comprehensive, current knowledge of applicable codes, regulations, and standards; reviewing new codes and changes to existing codes; maintaining an awareness of new methods, materials, trends, and advances in the profession; maintaining professional certifications.
  • Performing other related duties, as required.

Minimum Qualifications:     A high school diploma or GED equivalency with five years of experience in construction work, inspections, and code compliances or any equivalent combination of education and experience to meet the above stated responsibilities.  ICC Residential and Commercial Inspector certifications required. Extensive working knowledge of building, plumbing, electrical and mechanical codes, and related Federal and State laws, City codes, ordinance, policies, and regulations.
