Listing Summary

The Permit Technician serves as key office personnel who interact on a daily basis with the public, City of Johns Creek employees, Inspectors, Plans Examiners, and the Chief Building Official.  The Permit Technician reports to the Chief Building Official.  He/she performs a variety of detailed tasks and ongoing assignments as outlined below.

This position is non-exempt, and overtime will be required as necessary.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • General duties will be in taking plans, checking for completeness, and issuing permits.
  • Interfacing with customers to service their permitting needs.
  • Issuing and/or tracking permits through the permitting process, beginning with application acceptance, plan review, inspections and permit closure.
  • Establishing and maintaining systems to ensure that all files, letters, reference manuals, field inspection reports, permit files, site plans, construction plans, and other data or material is maintained in an organized fashion.
  • Processes payments for permits and routes plans to Plans Coordinator to initiate review process.
  • Maintains knowledge of relevant City of Johns Creek ordinances, fee schedules, building division policies and procedures, and contractor licensing requirements.
  • Maintains general knowledge of State of Georgia adopted building codes and relevant State and Fulton County regulations.
  • Explains policies and applicable ordinances, regulations, and permitting process and requirements to customers.
  • Schedules inspections and contacts requestor if there are issues.
  • Processes requests for Certificates of Occupancy/Completion for approval by Chief Building Official.
  • Ensures that all permit files, plans, specification documents, and related documents are maintained in the physical filing/organization system and/or scanned to the electronic records management system.
  • Responds to Open Records Requests and keeps records of information provided.
  • Troubleshoots, investigates, and resolves permit issues.
  • Prepares building permit reports as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Three or more years of building and permitting or related experience.
  • Operate modern office equipment, including computer equipment and software programs relevant to the work performed.
  • Communicate effectively in person, over the telephone, and in writing.
  • Consistently demonstrate professionalism, ethical integrity, and exceptional customer service.
  • Fluent in the written, spoken, and comprehension of English as the primary language at work and within the community.
  • Knowledge of and ability to fully use Microsoft Office Suite applications.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Use and knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software.
  • ICC Permit Technician certification or willing to obtain certification within 6 months.
