Job Summary:

This position is responsible for maintaining security at the county jail.

Major Duties:

  • Maintains the security of the detention center by conducting security checks and performing cell searches and inspections.
  • Performs all inmate booking functions, including fingerprinting, and photographing inmates.
  • Takes head counts, conducts inmate searches and seizures, and administers inmate discipline and privileges.
  • Issue’s meals, clothing, linens, and personal items to inmates; dispenses medication as authorized.
  • Maintains files on inmates and their property.
  • Supervises all church calls.
  • Assists with the transportation of inmates to such locations as medical appointments, court appearances, and other correctional facilities.
  • Performs yards calls for inmates.
  • Maintains jail records for Sheriff's Office.
  • Supervises inmates during work activities around the jail.
  • Supervises the operation of the inmate store as assigned, including bookkeeping-related work.
  • Performs inmate sick-calls.
  • Oversees all jail visitation, including security scans.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge Required:

  • Knowledge of law enforcement and corrections processes, including bonding procedures.
  • Knowledge of applicable state and federal laws and county and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of first-aid and CPR techniques.
  • Knowledge of drug interaction precautions when administering medications.
  • Skill in record-keeping.
  • Skill in the use of physical restraint methods and equipment.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • This position is required to supervise state inmate labor.  Employee must pass P.O.S.T. Certification within the time frame required by this department, which is normally within six months, but may be altered.

The successful candidate must pass a Background/Reference Check, and Pre-Employment Drug Screenings prior to the start of employment.
