The City of Valdosta, Georgia is seeking a Utilities Director.  The City of Valdosta is a unique community, blending its historic past with a dynamic and high growth environment.  Valdosta is the county seat of Lowndes County, located on the southern border of Georgia off I-75.  Valdosta has seen explosive growth in the last decade and is the 14th largest city in Georgia. Valdosta-Lowndes is a thriving community with an economy balanced for growth, where wages are increasing at a healthy pace, yet costs of living remain competitively low. The City of Valdosta is a service-oriented organization of more than 600 employees.  The city aspires to be a healthy, vibrant, safe environment where residents live, work, play and grow in a diverse community that values families and neighbors.  The city has a history of supporting the Utilities Department initiatives that build trust between the Department and the residents it serves. The Department consists of 88 employees whose primary goals include water and sewer for the city’s residents, businesses, property and critical infrastructure resources. The department serves 23,000 utility ac-counts with 442 miles of water mains and 22 miles of force mains. There is one (1) primary Water Treatment Plant and two (2) Waste Water Plants in Valdosta. The departmental budget is approximately $25,000,000.

The City of Valdosta seeks a dedicated professional that is ready to embrace the challenges and opportunities of the position in a diverse and growing community. The new Utilities Director must possess superior management skills particularly in the areas of project and fiscal management. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate strong departmental leadership and have a passionate commitment to serving the citizens of Valdosta. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to be grounded in utilities management, best practices and project/budget management. The Utilities Director will develop long-range plans, oversee the management of capital and water and sewer projects, and manage the department’s budget and expenditures. Additionally, the candidate should be a professional who is a dedicated team player who can quickly gain the confidence of the department and must have the ability to build trust through the development of partnerships.  The candidate must be a proven leader with the ability to function as an integral part of the management team under the direction of the City Manager.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, public administration, project management or a closely related field, with a Master's degree preferred

• A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in a related utilities, water & sewer or engineering field; or equivalent training, education, and/or experience required

• Engineer in Training (EIT) is preferred

• Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Georgia Driver’s License within 30 days of hire

• Possession of or ability to readily obtain an appropriate state-certified license for water or wastewater treatment or distribution as appropriate.

Compensation & Benefits:

The starting salary for this position DOQ of the selected candidate is expected to be in the range of $95,000 - $115,000 with a comprehensive benefits package including: medical, dental and life insurance coverage, Long Term Disability (LTD), retirement (pension) plan, optional Deferred Compensation (457b) Retirement Plan, paid-time-off, eight and one-half (8.5) days of paid holidays each calendar year, Employee Assistance Program and prescription drug card program. The City of Valdosta offers a worksite clinic free of charge to its employees.
