Full Job Description
Responsible for managing assigned staff and police programs. This position is classified as non-exempt. Job Responsibilities/Duties
Functions as a first line supervisor.
Supervises, trains, and directs police officers.
Patrols an assigned area, generally by vehicle, to prevent crimes and enforce laws and ordinances.
Serves warrants and makes arrests.
Directs traffic, operates traffic radar monitoring equipment and issues traffic citations.
Gathers and labels evidence and takes photographs and fingerprints for court case preparation.
Interviews witnesses and suspects, retains statements and depositions, and writes investigative reports.
Files charges before appropriate judge, arrests suspects, and takes suspects before judge for arraignment and setting of bond.
Appears in court as required.
Fosters good police-community relations among residents in the community, works with community groups to inform citizens of police department activity and crime prevention.
Keeps records of activities and makes reports concerning crimes, complaints, accidents, and investigations.
Shares information and works with other law enforcement agencies as directed and appropriate.
Develops and implements community oriented policing programs as assigned.
Prepares related reports.
Inspects and evaluates assigned subordinate’s reports and observations, correcting observed deficiencies and maintaining established standards counseling, training, and disciplining, etc.
Directs field activities of subordinates ensuring that proper policies and procedures are followed and takes command in the event of major incidents.
May conduct roll call, briefing, and training.
Receives instructions from higher authority as to duties to be performed.
Prepares employee evaluations and conducts timely performance appraisals/coaching’s.
Schedules employees" vacations and compensatory time off.
Conducts squad meetings, relaying information from previous shifts and surrounding areas.
Informs officers of new policies or laws and any upcoming changes in existing policies and laws.
Responds to the scene of major incidents to ensure that they are completed satisfactorily.
Accepts citizen complaints and investigates as much as possible and recommends action when applicable.
Investigates incidents of minor policy violations by officers.
Assists on calls for service and enforces laws and ordinances.
Checks officers arrests for legalities.
Functions in the role of a police officer as necessary.
Conducts routine inspections of in-car camera systems and body-worn cameras.
Monitors and evaluates officers response to resistance.
Assists in routine maintenance and inspection of fleet patrol vehicles.
Adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in the Department and City attendance policies and procedures; ensures all behaviors comply with the City’s Personnel Rules and Regulations and Dept. S.O.P
Minimum Requirements, Certificates & Licenses
Minimum Qualifications / Acceptable Equivalency:
High School diploma or GED equivalent
Five years police experience
Georgia Peace Officer Certification
Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: - Ability to direct and motivate employees; ability to supervise, organize, and review the work of lower level staff; knowledge of federal, state, and local laws; ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions, departmental policy, rules, regulations, and laws; knowledge of the use and care of vehicles, firearms, and specialized equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other law enforcement agencies, judicial officials, and the general public; ability to analyze situations and adopt a quick, effective, and reasonable course of action, CID experience preferred.
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Ability to form and maintain effective relationships with coworkers and citizen.
Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.
Conditions of Employment:
Must have a valid Class "C" Driver’s License prior to application, Must pass a drug test, driver’s license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification check.
Must have good oral and written communication skills and have the ability to follow oral and written instructions of moderate complexity.
Must have the ability to exercise an initiative in dealing with routine problems.
Must have knowledge of statutory law, city and department policies and procedures, and basic principles of supervision.
Must be in good physical condition.
The work is typically performed while sitting, standing, walking, running, bending, crouching or stooping. The work also requires the ability to climb stairs and to work at varying heights. The employee occasionally lifts light or heavy objects, uses equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and must be able to distinguish between shades of color and must have vision acuity to read and recognize objects at various distances. The employee must also use the physical force necessary to arrest and restrain persons.

The work requires the use of protective clothing and devices.
Machines, Tools, Equipment and Work Aids: The essential functions of this position require the use of special garments such as a uniform, gun, and/or gun belt with accessories, intermediate weapon, and body-worn camera.
