This position is responsible for inspecting work performed by contractors involved in the construction of subdivisions, roads and bridges, and drainage systems.  An incumbent in this position may be designated Senior Construction Inspector.  This job is a safety sensitive position that will require a pre-employment drug test and subsequent random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with Barrow County Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace. 

Typical Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
  • Or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of this position.

  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

Essential Duties:

  • Inspects and coordinates with contractors for paving projects to include but not be limited to: inspecting paving, performing roll tests, keeping up with quantities used, and collecting material tickets
  • Conducts on-site inspections to ensure compliance with county ordinances and plan specifications, including position of catch basins and pipes, compaction of sub-grade and paving base, and installation of curb and gutters.
  • Conducts on-site inspections on county rights-of-way to ensure compliance with utility permits.
  • Conducts on-site inspections to ensure compliance with timber permits.
  • Approves the location and size of residential driveway pipe and ensures compliance with permit.
  • Maintains a daily log on work performed and inspections conducted.
  • Prepares inspection reports.
  • Patrols county roads to ensure that street signs are properly installed.  Help with roadway inventory and condition scores.
  • Responds to inquiries from property owners and the general public.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws, county ordinances, and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of road building and construction practices.
  • Knowledge of the geography and street/road systems of the city/county.
  • Skill in reading and interpreting plans, topographical maps, roadway plan, profiles, and cross-sections.
  • Skill in maintaining records and preparing reports.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
