Position Summary
This position is responsible for assisting the lineworker in various aspects of line maintenance, repair, and construction.

Position Description
Essential Job Duties

  • Prepare and assemble various line (overhead and underground) apparatus for particular work being performed.
  • Hand lineworker necessary protective equipment needed for work performed (hot sticks, rubber goods, blankets, gloves, etc.).
  • Drive and operate the various equipment’s.
  • Performs duties in compliance with all safety policies and procedures.
  • Prepare pole mount transformers and assist with installation.
  • Assist lineworker in second bucket while working on lines.
  • Assemble conduit and place in trench.
  • Assist with pulling wire.
  • Communicate with power plant dispatch regarding opening/closing and tagging/un-tagging of circuits while work is being performed.
  • Assist with various meter reading routes.
  • Assist with utility locates whenever needed.
  • Stock trucks with material commonly used on a daily basis.
  • Assist with cleaning warehouse, storage yard area and protective equipment (hot sticks and rubber goods).
  • Assist with washing and maintaining equipment in proper working order.
  • Assist with loading of various materials onto trucks and/or trailers.
  • Assist with keeping unauthorized people away from work area.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge required by the position

  • Knowledge of the methods, practices, tools, materials, and equipment involved in the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of underground, overhead, and substation distribution design principles.
  • Knowledge of load management principles.
  • Knowledge of electrical metering.
  • Knowledge of city electrical specifications.
  • Knowledge of relevant state and federal regulations.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of department policies and procedures.
  • Skill in utilizing specialized tools and equipment related to the construction, repair, and maintenance of electrical infrastructure.
  • Skill in the operation of computers and job-related software programs.
  • Skill in reading and interpreting technical papers, codes, and handbooks.
  • Skill in evaluating plans, policies, procedures, and products.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

Supervisory Controls
The Power Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

Guidelines

Guidelines include Electric Cities of Georgia specifications, the American Public Power Association Safety Manual, NESC code, and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

Complexity/scope of work

  • The work consists of related technical duties. The variety of work assignments, dangerous field conditions, and inclement weather contribute to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to assist in the installation, maintenance, and repair of the electrical utility system as authorized. Successful performance helps ensure the efficient and effective delivery of electric services to customers.

Contacts                 

  • Contacts are typically with coworkers, vendors, consultants, contractors, electricians, representatives of other agencies, and the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.

Physical demands/work environment

  • The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, stooping, or walking. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
  • The work is typically performed in an office, stockroom, warehouse, and outdoors. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and occasional cold or inclement weather. Some of the work is performed on utility poles, in elevated buckets, and in the presence of electrified lines. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

Supervisory and Management Responsibility
None.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for six months to one year.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated within 6 months.
  • Ability to respond to after-hours outages, emergencies, or other situations within (45) minutes.
