REPORTS TO:              Utility Director

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

 

This is a non-exempt, hourly position responsible for the collection of metering data from customer sites throughout the City.  The Meter Reader is primarily responsible for reading water and electric meters and keying-in data on a handheld data recorder. Meter readers are responsible for recognizing an abnormal output of utilities, such as extremely high electricity or water usage, and for finding the source of the utility leak or problem before repairing it. 

The Meter Reader has a primary focus on providing superior customer service to the citizens and customers of the City of Fairburn in handling a variety of issues. Incumbents in this classification must maintain professionalism and courtesy when exposed to various situations and may be assigned to answer telephone calls and perform functions associated with utility programs and operations.

POSITION DUTIES:

Under General Supervision of the Utility Director:

 

  • Using an Automatic Meter Reader (AMR), automatically collects consumption, diagnostic and status data, transferring that data to a central database for billing, trouble shooting, and analyzing purposes.
  • Reads water and electric meters and enters readings into a handheld meter data recorder.
  • Reads water and electric meters which are located on the customer's property.
  • Reads electric and water meters for monthly usage.
  • Shuts-off service of delinquent customers.
  • Replaces defective electric meters when necessary.
  • Represents the City to the general public and customers of Fairburn’s Electric and Water Departments in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Drives a city vehicle along a defined route (Valid, Class C Georgia Driver’s License required).
  • Performs other work-related duties, as assigned.

 

minimum QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

 

Experience and Education:

  • One (1) year of work experience in Utility or Public sector.
  • One (1) year interacting with the public (customer service) experience.
  • Public sector and/or Utility experience is preferred.
  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
  • Any combination of experience and education.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:

    •  

 

 

  • Utilize appropriate personal protective clothing and equipment and follow safety procedures.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity, tact, and excellent customer service while interacting with others.
  • Make simple mathematical calculations quickly and accurately.
  • Create and maintain simple records.
  • Follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Learn to read and record data from water and electric meters.
  • Learn to record readings by entering data through a 10-key pad.
  • Deal tactfully and courteously with co-workers and the general public.
  • Perform physical labor including lifting 50 pounds of static weight.

 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Walks long distances; climbs stairs; lifts water meter box covers; lifts heavy gratings covering industrial water meter vaults; lifts trap doors; and opens and closes heavy gates and doors; reports complaints; and performs other related duties as assigned.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is primarily performed outdoors.  Incumbent may be exposed to heat and cold temperatures and all types of inclement weather.
