MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Directs correctional facility operations; ensures personnel comply with state Department of Corrections guidelines. Ensures the humane and proper treatment of inmates, including providing health care, exercise, and sanitation services. Hires, trains, evaluates, disciplines, and counsels subordinate personnel. Investigates incidents concerning security and operations of the facility and personnel. Supervises the maintenance and repair of the facility. Develops, implements, maintains, and modifies department policies and procedures. Prepares and monitors annual budget and expenditures; oversees accounting and other financial procedures; oversees supplies, materials, and equipment inventory, requisitions, and purchasing activities; coordinates and communicates with outside food service vendors and medical service providers to discuss services and contracts. Supervises the scheduling of correctional facility staff. Directs all security and inmate care and treatment functions; oversees inmate work detail assignments. Monitors the processing, classification, clothing, segregation, and detention of inmates for compliance with regulations and procedures. Monitors the facility and surrounding grounds to ensure proper cleaning, maintenance, construction, and repair. Prepares and maintains required records and reports. Supervises the maintenance, processing, and disposition of all contraband obtained from inmates. Carries out a continuous effort to improve operations, work processes and works cooperatively and jointly to provide continuous improvement and customer-driven service. Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of modern corrections practices and procedures and the criminal justice system. Knowledge of the principles and practices of correctional institution administration and security. Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, county ordinances, and department policies and procedures. Knowledge of Georgia Department of Corrections Standard Operating Procedures. Knowledge of management and supervisory techniques.Knowledge of court systems and processes. Knowledge of law enforcement practices and procedures. Skill in planning, organizing, and developing work schedules. Skill in using standard office equipment. Skill in management and supervision. Skill in budget and facility management. Skill in the use of self-defense techniques and equipment. Skill in oral and written communication.
MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:
A Bachelor’s Degree in Correctional or Security Management, Criminal Justice, Public or Business Administration; Master's Degree preferred; plus three to five years of professional level experience in a correctional or penal institution; having overall jurisdiction over correctional or penal institutions; or any combination of education, training and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. This position is required to supervise state inmate labor. Employee must pass P.O.S.T. certification within the time frame required by this department, which is normally within six months but may be altered.
The work is typically performed with the employee sitting, standing or walking. The employee must frequently lift light objects, use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and be able to restrain persons.
