Assistant Public Works Director

The Gilmer County Public Works Department has an immediate opening for a Full Time Assistant Public Works Director.

The purpose of the position is to assist in the direction of operations, develop, plan, and control the operations of the Road and Solid Waste Departments, under the direction of the Public Works Director. This position also serves as Grant Administrator, to include researching, managing, and preparing grant applications/proposals for the County.

Assists in planning and overseeing employees, programs, projects, and activities of the Public Works office (which includes roads, storm sewer collection and drainage, fleet management, solid waste, and special programs) Assists and make recommendations for the preparation and implementation of the department’s budget, improvement plan, and fleet management consistent with standard operating procedures.

This position requires professional judgment and initiative within the framework of established regulations, policies, and the Department Strategic Plan. In the absence of the Director of Public Works, this position may assume the duties of the department director when assigned.

Bachelor’s Degree in civil engineering, transportation or closely related field required. Must be at least 21 years of age.  High School Diploma/GED required.

Must have 3+ years of managerial and/or Public Works experience.

Must have a valid Georgia Driver’s License. 

Proficiency in Word and Excel required.  Able to prepare and receive, various forms, reports, correspondences, equipment operation manuals, procedures, handbooks, reference materials, manuals, timecards, supply lists, and/or other documents. Must have excellent communication skills.

Salary range for this position is $45k-$55k, depending on experience with Grant Administration.
