Solid Waste Route Supervisor

General Description and Classification Standards

The main objective of the Solid Waste Route Supervisor is to supervise crews of Environmental Equipment Operators and Environmental Service Workers engaged in curbside collections. The responsibilities of this position include, but not limited to are: supervising staff, monitor and analyze daily route status, ensure daily routes are completed with no misses, investigate and resolve customer complaints, inspect pre and post trip reports, evaluating vehicle readiness, complete and analyze daily and monthly reports and coach employees on safety.

This is full-time supervisory role over many skilled workers. Creating a winning culture is very important aspect of the Route Supervisor. This is a solution driven role that requires critical thinking to solve complex logistic problems that may arise daily.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Below is a list of some of the typical day-to day duties of the Route Supervisor:

Ensures staff reports to rollcall in city issued uniform and appropriate safety gear

Assign employees routes and monitor their performance

Communicate with employees while they are in the field to make any required adjustments

Prepares daily observations on daily garbage, yard trimming, and recycling to management team.

Ensures preventive maintenance is completed as scheduled

Investigate customer complaints and bring them to a resolution

Designs routes and make adjusts as needed

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of solid waste operations.

Knowledge of various city codes.

In-depth knowledge of most concepts and methods related to the area of assignment.

Knowledge of basic supervisory skills.

Knowledge of administrative and safety requirements for the assigned area.

Skill in performing all typical tasks associated with the area of assignment and in adapting to new situations or configurations.

Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills in providing direction to a group of skilled employees.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Ability to train and manage a group of skilled and semi-skilled employees in carrying out technical, maintenance, or construction activities.

Ability to operate rear loaders, sweepers, front end loaders, garbage truck, knuckle boom truck, and dump


Minimum Qualifications – Education and Experience

High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)

4 years’ work experience including 1 year of supervisory experience (or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job).

Microsoft Office

Preferred Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree

Supervisory/management experience highly preferred
