White County will be accepting applications for the position of Communications Officer to work at the E/911 Center. Applicants must be able to work 12 hour shifts including nights and weekends and travel to training as required. JOB SUMMARY:  This position is responsible for receiving emergency and administrative calls from the public and dispatching appropriate emergency personnel.

MAJOR DUTIES:

o    Receives, monitors, and dispatches radio communications traffic for Police, EMS, Fire, and Sheriff’s Departments throughout the county, including all 911.

o    Receives and screens incoming telephone calls from the public and other public safety agencies; categorizes and prioritizes calls during emergency situations.

o    Dispatches the appropriate emergency personnel to incident locations; provides emergency medical instructions to callers prior to the arrival of emergency personnel.

o    Maintains a continuous log of incoming telephone and radio calls; logs incoming calls for participating agencies.

o    Notifies other agencies and jurisdictions of emergency and non-emergency incidents.

o    Monitors and routes incoming messages from national and state computer networks.

o    Maintains pass-on log for incoming shift personnel.

o    Maintains radio and communications equipment; conducts test checks as needed.

o    Maintains and operates computer-aided dispatch system.

o    Verifies accuracy of data on E-911 screens; prepares necessary forms for correction of information.

o    Participates in training exercises.

o    Operates and maintains recording devices.

o    Performs housekeeping duties at communications center.

o    Performs other related duties as assigned.

o    Knowledge of POST procedures and GCIC/NCIC regulations.

o    Knowledge of the geography and road system of White County.

o    Knowledge of the radio codes used in public safety work.

o    Knowledge of dispatching procedures for various agencies.

o    Knowledge of CPR procedures.

o    Skill in the operation of radio, communications, and recording equipment.

o    Skill in operating a computer.

o    Skill in dealing with the public.

o    Skill in maintaining records and preparing reports.

o    Skill in making decisions accurately and rapidly.

o    Skill in reading maps.

o    Skill in oral and written communication.
