Public Works Crew Leader (Asphalt)

This position is responsible for leading and participating in the work of a public works crew engaged in performing routine and extensive unskilled, semi-skilled, and skilled work assignments associated with asphalt maintenance of city rights-of-way, parking areas, curbsides, properties, and other sites under city obligation. Inspects the work of assigned personnel to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with established guidelines safety regulations. Responds to public questions or comments pertaining to work site projects; communicates with general public to ensure safety, education, and plans for maintenance and repairs. Operates asphalt shovel, measuring and marking tools, and pothole tamper on city rights-of-way, curbsides, parking areas, properties, and other sites under city obligation. Performs pothole repairs; curb maintenance, gutter clearing. Maintains responsibility for assigned asphalt maintenance equipment and vehicle; performs pre-trip inspections to equipment; checks brakes, lights, hoses, belts, air pressure, fluid levels, etc.; reports any equipment repair or maintenance needs to immediate supervisor. Cleans and washes equipment. May perform minor repairs and maintenance procedures on equipment utilized in asphalt maintenance. Ensures service truck is stocked properly. Ensures department equipment, supplies, materials, and tools are maintained and stored properly. Ensures related paperwork is completed properly and turned in to appropriate parties. Delivers tools and materials to assigned job sites and procure same. Performs related duties.
Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years’ experience or service. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity. The work is typically performed outdoors at work sites. The employee may be exposed to inclement weather and machinery with moving parts. The work may require the use of protective devices. The work can be demanding. Working for extended periods of time in emergency situations, and at the discretion of supervision.
