The City of Tucker is a dynamic city in metro Atlanta, perfectly situated along the Perimeter with excellent transportation access, an incredible park network, a vibrant business community and engaged citizens. This long-standing community of nearly 37,000 recently incorporated in 2016 and operates under a council-manager form of government with a mayor and six council members. The heart of the City is the authentic downtown with a growing variety of restaurants and retail attractions. The City also has a robust industrial corridor, a rapidly redeveloping mixed-use district at Northlake and many new residential developments underway. The City of Tucker’s energy and enthusiasm is contagious, and we are looking for a candidate who can leverage these resources and lead the City’s economic development efforts.
Our Economic Development Manager will serve as a member of the City of Tucker’s Senior Leadership Team, reporting directly to the Assistant City Manager, who is also the Community and Economic Development Director. The Economic Development Manager will work closely to provide the Tucker community with growth opportunities, quality jobs, and a sustainable quality of life by attracting new investment, and by facilitating the retention and expansion of existing businesses and industries. The position will also market Tucker to prospective investors and regularly work with local, regional, and state partners to ensure Tucker’s brand is well-known and competitively positioned to attract investment opportunities. Tucker believes its future would be best served by dedicating one-person full time to the function and has budgeted for the Economic Development Manager. The position will supervise the Business Outreach Coordinator, who focuses on working with our over 3,000 businesses and be supported by others in the City Manager’s Off ice and the Community Development Department.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIC PLAN
The City of Tucker has completed extensive planning to date on land use, parks, transportation, and downtown redevelopment but it has yet to finalize a comprehensive economic development strategic plan. Working with local, regional, and state partners, a central initial responsibility for this new position will be the development of a strategic plan that takes stock of the City’s economic development successes and builds an economic development vision with the identification of implementable associated short- and long-range strategies.
MARKETING & BRANDING
While Tucker has a solid reputation for supporting businesses, there remains an opportunity to better market Tucker’s enviable business climate and location. Learnings from the economic developmentstrategic plan will help inform the resources and information needed for a marketing campaign aimed at bolstering the City’s economic base and growing its primary job centers. While the City’s stellar reputation precedes it, still there remains an opportunity to better market Tucker’s enviable business climate.
DOWNTOWN DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY/URBAN REDEVELOPMENT AGENCY
The City has already activated both a Downtown Development Authority and
an Urban Redevelopment Agency. These
are important tools for advancing quality development and redevelopment in the City – goals of the Comprehensive Plan. It will be the responsibility of the Economic Development Manager to develop and implement a program for best utilizing these resources.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT LIAISON
Tucker has a range of local, state, and regional economic development partners including the Tucker Business Association, Old Town Tucker Merchants Association, Tucker-Northlake CID, Tucker Summit CID, Decide DeKalb, Discover DeKalb, DeKalb Chamber, Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, and the State Department of Economic Development. The Economic Development Manager will need to foster strategic relationships with these key players to advance site selection and business expansion in Tucker.
Tucker’s downtown plays a vital role as the heart of the City’s civic and community life. The number one goal of the City’s Comprehensive Plan is for the downtown area to be an even more vibrant civic center off ering increased opportunities to live, work, shop and gather as a community while remaining an authentic hometown downtown.
LAWRENCEVILLE HIGHWAY CORRIDOR REDEVELOPMENT
As a community that experienced its first wave of development in the 1960s and 1970s, there are a significant number of commercial parcels that have reached their lifespan. In particular, there are stretches of Lawrenceville Highway, a gateway corridor to the City, that are under-utilized and are called out in the Comprehensive Plan for commercial redevelopment.
NORTHLAKE REGIONAL CENTER
The Northlake area has dramatically improved since the City’s inception with Northlake Mall redeveloping into a mixed-use area and new multi-family and retail projects. The Economic Development Manager will need to focus on the continued reemergence of Northlake which has much unrealized potential.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
Tucker is seeking a dynamic individual with a high energy level and a passion for eco-nomic development. It is interested in candidates who are proactive and achievement oriented, who build relationships and teams with diverse stakeholders and who will roll up their sleeves to get things done. Minimum qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in business or public administration, economics, marketing, or a related field. A Mas-ter’s degree is preferred. The ideal candidate will also have five years of progressively responsible experience in economic development.
