This position is responsible for operating a wide variety of assigned complex and heavy duty construction equipment associated with checking, installing, repairing and maintaining city water distribution lines, mains and meters. May supervise the work of other equipment operators and crew in the absence of the Crew Leader; may train other operators in the operation of light, medium and heavy equipment operation. Performs various tasks at work sites when not operating equipment. Performs pre-trip inspections and maintains responsibility for all assigned equipment and vehicles. Performs related duties.
Knowledge and level of competency associated with the completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills associated with a high school education. Experience sufficient to understand the basic principles relevant to the duties of the position, usually associated with one (1) to two (2) years experience or service. Possession of a Georgia Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within one year. Knowledge of departmental and city policies and procedures. Skill in oral and written communication. Skill in training and inspecting the work of others. Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of assigned equipment and vehicles. Knowledge of the city’s water distribution system. Knowledge and skill in the installation, repair and maintenance of water distribution lines, mains and other related system components.

Work is typically performed outdoors while intermittently standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. Lift light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity and distinguish between shades of color. The employee may be exposed to inclement weather, machinery with moving parts, noise, dust, dirt and grease. Requires the use of protective devices such as goggles or gloves.
