POSITION TITLE: Victim Compensation Advocate, FY22-42 (Grant Position)

DEPARTMENT: District Attorney’s Office

ENTRY SALARY: $17.04 per hour, plus benefits

JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for advocating for the rights of victims and witnesses of crimes. Makes initial contact with victims and/or their families following crimes; provides information regarding the Victims Bill of Rights and the status of the case; gathers information and answers questions; provides continual support to victims and witnesses throughout the process. Builds case files; requests and gathers information needed to prosecute the cases. Provides notifications to victims and witnesses regarding court hearing dates; coordinates transportation as needed; escorts victims and witnesses to court; prepares victims and witness for court appearances. Maintains current knowledge of the cases; remains in contact with victims, family members, and witnesses; provides updates on the status of cases; records updates contact information. Serves as liaison between victims, witnesses, the District Attorney’s Office, and prosecutors; schedules, conducts, and attends meetings between parties. Runs criminal histories for defendants, jurors, witnesses, and victims. Assists in collecting data on the number of victims and witnesses served, demographic information, types of crimes, and types and services provided. Assists victims with completing Victim Impact Statements, Temporary Protective Order applications, Victim Compensation forms, etc. Serves as liaison between victims, victim service providers, and the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council to assists in filing for Victim Compensation; provides information to the community regarding the Victim Compensation Program; assists victims with completing applications and gathering the correct documents to file the claim; provides information to the Victim Compensation Program on behalf of the victim to ensure claims are filed correctly; trains other advocates, law enforcement, and public agencies about Victim Compensation. Makes contact with victims at the disposition of criminal cases and assists with communication between the victim and the custodial agency before and after the release of the defendant. Coordinates services with other agencies or provides referrals for food, shelter, counseling, financial, or medical needs. Assists victims and witnesses with preparing for trial; attends children if parent or guardian is in courtroom. Performs related duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
