Job Title:  Maintenance Worker


Job Summary: This is a semi-skilled position that involves operating a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of the equipment, vehicles, and facilities within the Public Works Department.  Work involves locating and repairing equipment malfunctions and other problems, inspecting and maintaining Stormwater equipment.  Work is performed under the supervision of the Public Works Streets Supervisor.


Major Duties:


  • Maintains Public Works Department facility and equipment.
  • Inspects and/or repairs machines, at frequent intervals to insure that all aspects of the systems are functioning properly.
  • Assists skilled workers in the building of headwalls and catch basins.
  • Responds to complaints regarding storm water drainage and flooding; evaluates situation, and explains findings to supervisor.
  • Insures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use.
  • Drives trucks of various sizes and a variety of maintenance equipment in the loading, hauling, and unloading of various equipment, gravel, sand, and other materials associated with facility operation and maintenance.
  • Performs routine inspection and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment and vehicles, and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor; cleans equipment.
  • Operates a variety of power construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Performs facility maintenance, i.e., sweeps and mops floors, cleans restrooms, washes windows, removes trash, repaints outdoor facades as necessary, and maintains grounds.
  • Performs minor repairs such as, electrical, plumbing and other building repairs.

  • Maintains public grounds through mowing, seeding, planting, trimming, and refuse pickup.
  • Repairs potholes in City streets and roadways; flags traffic as necessary to ensure safety during all street and road assignments.
  • Replaces, installs, and/or repairs traffic posts and signs.
  • Removes loose trash and debris from streets and roadways.
  • May perform storm water maintenance, including cleaning retention ponds, ditches, catch basins, curbs, gutters, and sidewalks.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Knowledge Required by the Position:


  • Knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods, and procedures used in the operation activities of the Public Works facility.
  • Knowledge of maintaining mechanical equipment.
  • Knowledge of the Department’s operation and maintenance activities.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics.
  • Skills in using basic hand tools and driving trucks, tractors, and other equipment of various sizes.
  • Ability to attend and get certification in Flagging Safety and Safe Trenching and Excavation and Confined Spaces.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and heights over 10FT.  off the ground.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, and the general public.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records and reports.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time.


Supervisory Controls:  Work is performed under the general supervision of the Streets Supervisor.


Guidelines:  Guidelines include City and departmental policies and procedures, and other applicable Local, State and Federal laws and/or regulations.  These guidelines are clear and specific.

Complexity:  The position requires performance of specific tasks with minimal need for interpretation. 


Scope and Effect: The purpose of this position is to ensure the Public Works facility and equipment and public grounds are maintained.  Failure to properly maintain the facility, equipment, grounds and systems results in future problems, high repair costs, and prevents the Department from operating efficiently.


Personal Contacts: Contacts are typically with the supervisor, co-workers, vendors, other departments, and the general public.


Purpose of Contacts: Contacts are typically to give and exchange information, resolve problems and provide services.




Job Title:  Maintenance Worker (continued)


Physical Demands: The work requires intermittent periods of sitting, standing and

walking. When performing facilities maintenance, the incumbent is required to operate and/or drive large equipment, to climb stairs and ladders, reach over equipment to make adjustments, turn large valves, climb into confined areas, lift objects weighing over 50 pounds and use tools requiring a high degree of dexterity.  The incumbent must be able to carry heavy objects (10-100 lbs.) and bend, squat, twist, crawl, and/or climb on a daily basis.  Specific vision abilities required of this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.


Work Environment:  Work is performed both in and out of doors, sometimes in inclement weather conditions. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places, and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, risks of electrical shock from power tools and equipment, and vibration.  The employee can be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.  The noise level is usually very loud.  Occasionally appropriate safety equipment must be worn.


Supervisory and Management Responsibility: None.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED; prefer 1-2 years of technical/vocational coursework in mechanics; minimum of one (1) year of related experience; certification in Flagging Safety and Safe Trenching and Excavation preferred; possession of or ability to obtain (within 6 months of employment) a valid State of Georgia driver's license (Class C) and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR); any combination of education or experience is acceptable. Experience in vehicle and fleet maintenance is preferred.
