This position is primarily responsible for performing unskilled and semi-skilled work in support of the City’s various street and landscaping functions.



  • Performs routine street maintenance duties, including grass mowing, leaf and limb removal from roadsides, street upkeep and repair.
  • Operates a weed-eater and blower to edge city sidewalks and curbs.
  • Picks up litter from roadsides and curbs.
  • Assists with pouring, spreading, and leveling asphalt, concrete and gravel.
  • Washes and cleans city vehicles.
  • Loads and unloads stone, gravel, dirt, asphalt, and other street construction and maintenance materials.
  • Operates trucks and construction equipment as directed; makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; performs safety inspection of vehicles and equipment prior to use; may perform traffic and flagging duties.
  • Fills and repairs road shoulders; participates in cleaning, constructing and maintaining drainage ditches.
  • Rakes leaves and grass; plants and maintains flower beds; applies insecticides to plans and flowers.
  • Removes and disposes of dead animals found within the city limits.
  • Performs general housekeeping duties on city buildings.
  • Coordinates the buildings and grounds maintenance work of detainees; ensures detainees wear proper safety gear and clothing.
  • Performs routine maintenance of equipment, including washing, checking fluid levels, and lubricating.

  • Operates a push mower and tractor to mow grass.
  • Maintains buildings and equipment used by the department. Performs housekeeping duties as directed
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.




Minimum Education and Experience:

High School diploma or equivalent.

Required Licenses or Certifications:

Possession of a valid Georgia Driver’s license.


Additional Requirements:

Applicant must have a satisfactory motor vehicle report.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:   


  • Knowledge of safety procedures pertaining to public works activities;
  • Skill in operating street and grounds maintenance tools and equipment.
  • Skill in the use of standard equipment and hand tools such as chain saws, jack hammers, wood chippers, truck, mowers, and various hand tools.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions.



Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a field environment. The work consists of continuous outdoor activity, frequent standing, sitting, walking, squatting, bending, twisting upper body, climbing, exposure to extreme heat, cold, noise, mechanical hazards, fume/odor hazards, toxic waste/material hazards.

Must be able to work in confined spaces; walk and work on slippery and uneven surfaces. Requires manual dexterity sufficient to grasp, hold objects and tools with full range of motion in wrists and arms. Must be able to walk occasionally for 6 to 8 hours per day or longer in necessary.

Must have no impairments that limit work capabilities in year round weather conditions.

Must be able to bend and twist for lifting, installing and reading water meters and other water appurtenances.

Must have no limitations which restrict entering, exiting and working in water service, valve and hydrant manholes. This includes reaching, standing, stooping, bending, twisting and kneeling while performing the needed repairs or installation.

Must have no imitations that restrict shoveling of dirt for 6 to 8 hours per day.

Must be able to climb ladders, crawl across pipelines, lift or carry 50 pounds while climbing ladder or steep banks. Must have no climbing or height restrictions up to 12 feet on a ladder or other equipment. Must be able to lift manhole covers weighing in excess of 50 pounds several times a day if necessary.








Work is performed primarily in an outdoor field environment; travel from site to site; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke fumes, noxious odors, gases, mechanical and electrical hazards, and all types of weather and temperature conditions; work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces and rough terrain; work at heights.
