Code Enforcement Officer

The City of Garden City Planning is seeking a qualified individual for the position of Code Enforcement Officer

Essential Job Functions:

  • Fields code enforcement related complaints by responding to telephone, internet, email or facsimile requests from residents, builders, property owners, utilities, public officials and property managers.
  • Conducts initial surveys of buildings, structures and land to determine if they are substandard and/or in violation of City codes and ordinances.
  • Inspects existing structures for violations of City codes and ordinances.
  • Issues code violation notices.
  • Issues City ordinance citations.
  • Prepares and attends Municipal Court proceedings and testifies as required.
  • Attends City workshop/council meetings as required.
  • Maintains professional certifications and ensures required training hours are met.


Candidates must have an excellent work history with experience and knowledge of Code Enforcement (two years), for consideration.  Candidates should have a thorough knowledge of the International Property Maintenance Code (IPMC).  

Candidates must have a high school diploma or GED.  Some college is desired.    

Candidates must have the following International Code Council (ICC) Certification: “Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector”.  The following ICC Certification is desired: “Zoning Inspector”.  Additional ICC certifications are a plus.         

Candidate must have or obtain within six months of employment: Georgia Soil Water Conservation Level 1B Certification (Red Card).  Experience with stormwater inspections is desired.             

Candidates should have experience testifying in Court and preparing Court orders to be signed.  Candidates should have ability to research light to moderate legal topics under minimal supervision, research complex legal topics under supervision, and use the information to draft documents and make decisions.  Candidates should have experience researching local ordinances, adopted codes (including the IPMC and other ICC and model codes), relevant case law, and relevant regulations to bolster court cases and prepare documents and recommendations.      

Candidates should be proficient with technology to include the use of various levels of software and applications for data entry, photographs, drafting documents, making presentations, communications, and related activities.  Software and applications used includes: Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Outlook, GPS, and photographing applications. 

Candidates should have a knowledge of Garden City, GA geography.                 

All persons considered for employment are required to submit to a pre-employment physical, drug-screen, and criminal background investigation.  A current Georgia driver’s license along with an acceptable driving history is required.

This position works Monday through Friday 8am-5pm.  Occasional weekend work or overtime projects may be required as needed.
