As a Master Equipment Mechanic you will be responsible for the repair and maintenance of city vehicles and equipment.


 Essential Job Functions:

  • Diagnoses and repairs electronic engines, heavy equipment, specialized equipment, electronic transmissions, anti-lock braking systems, electrical systems, multiplex systems, air conditioning and heating systems, steering systems, fuel systems, and suspensions.
  • Diagnoses and repairs engines, transmissions, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, brake systems, axles and light, medium and heavy trucks and equipment.
  • Rebuilds and repairs fire pump transmissions, fire truck valves, water pumps, transfer cases, differentials, brakes, power steering boxes, and engines.
  • Designs, repairs, fabricates and installs specialized equipmemt.
  • Test drives vehicles and equipment to ensure proper working conditions.
  • Performs failure analysis.
  • Performs initial inspections and preventive maintenance as required.
  • Performs complex repairs and diagnosis.
  • Prioritizes and schedules maintenance.
  • Maintains record of repairs to vehicles by posting data into Fleet management software.
  • Opens, closes and updates work orders.
  • Ensures that repairs are performed to specifications.
  • Assists others with complex repairs and diagnosis.
  • Assist master welder by providing minor to intermediate welding, fabrication and cutting jobs.
  • Performs minor welding and parts fabrication duties.
  • Reads and interprets repair manuals and schematics.
  • Performs service calls in the field.
  • Performs failure analysis.
  • Changes and repairs tires.
  • Installs after-market accessories.
  • Trains other personnel.
  • Works as a part of a team to help the maintenance and service operations become successful.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment.
  • Adheres to safety guidelines.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


 Minimum Qualifications:

High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by six (6) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of automotive and/or heavy equipment; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Must possess and maintain a valid state Class B Commercial Driver's License with an acceptable driving history or must obtain CDL within six months of employment. NIASE certification preferred. Experience with transmission and breaks highly preferred.

  • Knowledge of the repair and maintenance of city vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of techniques, practices, procedures, test equipment and documentation used in all aspects of maintenance performed on automotive, truck, fire apparatus, vehicles, and all other forms of fleet equipment.
