Opportunity

The City of Sandy Springs is in search of an intern to assist with the sustainability program. The City has many active sustainability projects, including the preparation of a comprehensive Sustainability Plan. Sandy Springs was recognized at the gold level from the Green Communities, a program of the Atlanta Regional Commission and will be seeking platinum level in spring 2023.

The Sustainability Intern will be responsible for the management of the Green Communities certification renewal. The intern will be tasked with auditing the measures already adopted and preparing supporting documentation for all measures pursued. This position requires communication with all City departments and outside organizations.

This internship is an opportunity to expand knowledge in environmental sustainability and gain experience in project management in a municipal setting.

Responsibilities

• Compile and organize large amounts of information
• Use a performance tracking system
• Organize and facilitate internal cross-departmental meetings
• Research sustainable practices
• Prepare recommendations and reports
• Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

• Knowledge of principles of environmental sustainability
• Ability to communicate complex issues
• Strong analytical skills
• Proactive, highly organized and efficient
• Rallying, collaborative attitude
• Upper-level studies in sustainability, environmental policy, urban planning or related area of study

Working Conditions

• Temporary position starting around May 15, 2022 and ending around August 31, 2022
• An average of 40 hours of work per week is expected
• Most of the work will be conducted in a typical office setting at City Hall, some site visits may be required
• Compensation: $12/h for undergraduate students; $15/h for graduating students, graduate students and recent graduates (must have graduated less than 6 months at the time of hiring)
• Reports to the Sustainability Manager in the Department of Recreation and Parks
