This position is responsible for supervising and participating in the maintenance of golf course, parks and outdoor athletic fields. Directs the maintenance of all outdoor recreation areas. Develops long and short term plans and goals for recreation grounds. Oversees the planting, care and maintenance of turf, ornamental plants, shrubs, trees and wetlands. Manages the water usage tracking plan and irrigation system operations; provides monthly reports on retaining ponds, wells and other water sources. Supervises and trains maintenance staff and conducts employee performance evaluations and assists with disciplinary actions. Oversees personnel in the proper and safe operation and maintenance of mechanical and power equipment. Plans and requests budget for additional or replacement capital equipment. Supervises and participates in the application and recording of fertilizers and pesticides. Supervises and controls all maintenance expenses, including payroll, supplies, chemicals and fertilizers. Develops annual operating budget requests; plans for maintenance and capital improvement projects; manages approved budgets. Schedules maintenance practices around member play and outings to maximize efficiency and minimize disruption to participants. Ensures quality playing surfaces on all sports fields. Assists in the development of departmental guidelines. Performs related duties.

Qualifications

Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Turfgrass and Golf Course Maintenance or a related field. Possession of a commercial pesticide applicator’s license by the State of Georgia. Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with three (3) to five (5) years’ experience or service. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Knowledge of the management of golf course greens, fairways and roughs, recreation sports fields and parks. Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of golf course construction and maintenance equipment. Knowledge of chemical application principles and guidelines.
