Bibb County Sheriff Office-Animal Welfare division is seeking to fill the position of Veterinarian Technician. The veterinarian technician is responsible for assisting the veterinarian in medical, surgical, and dental procedures; preparing patients for surgery; assists the doctor in administering anesthesia.

Education, Training and Experience: The Veterinarian Technician must possess a high school diploma or equivalent. A minimum of two (2) years experience as veterinary technician or assistant. A Veterinary Technician certification desired but not required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides compassionate care to the animals.
  • Performs physical examinations.
  • Gives injections and administers oral medications in accordance with shelter policy and under supervision of the Veterinarian.
  • Assists in restraining animals when necessary.
  • Properly cleans all surgical materials after they are used; keeps the operating room properly stocked and prepared for surgery.
  • Assists other staff members as required.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Veterinarian.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of feeding and general care of animals and of the habits and characteristics of animals.
  • Knowledge of the laws and ordinances relating to welfare of animals in Macon-Bibb County.
  • Knowledge of personal computers, including the ability to operate word processing and database programs in order to keep records, as required.
  • Ability and desire to work with animals.
  • Ability to handle animals running at large, particularly those that might be vicious, sick or injured.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with members of the general public, often in trying situations.
  • Ability to maintain records and make reports.
