The Utilities Maintenance Worker I position is a non-exempt hourly position responsible for maintaining water, sewer & storm water systems in the City. This is an entry level class in the Utilities Maintenance Worker series. This class is distinguished from the Utilities Maintenance Worker II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series including less complex construction, maintenance, and repair duties. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have limited or no directly related work experience. Employees are expected to perform a variety of duties and learn the full scope of duties assigned to Utilities Maintenance Workers. Advancement to the Utilities Maintenance Worker II level is based on demonstrated proficiency in performing the full range of utilities maintenance Worker duties and is at the discretion of higher level supervisory or management staff.  The Utilities Maintenance Worker I has the primary focus on providing superior customer service to the citizens and customers of the City of Fairburn while handling a variety of water, sewer, and storm water issues. The incumbent must maintain professionalism and courtesy when exposed to stressful situations.

SCHEDULE:  Normal operation hours: Monday – Friday; 7:00am - 4:00pm

 must be available to work flexible hours and schedules, including some evenings and weekends during emergency circumstances.


Job Responsibilities/Duties

  • Handles all routine and emergency maintenance issues on the water, sewer & storm water systems within the city in a timely manner.
  • Ensures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after each use.
  • Assist, identify, and resolve water, sewer and/or storm water problems.
  • Meets with contractors to discuss placement of water meters, fire hydrants, etc.
  • Assists with maintaining water department inventory.
  • Assists the fire department, as necessary, to help maintain fire hydrants.
  • Performs routine inspections and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment.
  • Ability to locate water, sewer, and/or storm water related pipelines.
  • Participates in revolving “on call” schedule.
  • Assists in maintaining records relating to inspection, maintenance activity, and repair of the storm water system.
  • Sets up or assists with set up of traffic control at work site in accordance with the Utilities Maintenance Worker III or Water/Sewer Supervisor’s instructions.
  • Repairs various portions of the water, sewer, and storm water system at frequent intervals, and ensures that all aspects of the system are functioning properly.
  • Operates a variety of maintenance equipment used in the water, sewer, and storm water utilities department.
  • Ability to complete electronic work orders using electronic equipment.
  • Performs other work-related duties, as assigned.


Education and Experience

    • Graduation from high school or possession of a GED.
    • At least one (1) year of utility maintenance experience preferred.
    • Possess a valid Georgia Drivers’ License and maintain a satisfactory MVR record.
    • Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds.

    • Knowledge of water, sewer, stormwater systems.

    • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively to the public.

    • Ability to learn to operate electronic equipment and software.

    • Skills in organizing, coordinating, and completing duties to meet scheduled deadlines.
    • Ability to work independently and/or a team environment and achieve common goals.
    • Knowledge of safety guidelines
    • Knowledge of department policies and procedures  
    • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and customers while completing daily tasks.
    • Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds.


Working Conditions



The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, fumes or airborne particles, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and occasional cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, boots, or gloves.  The employee may be exposed to work in areas where potential mechanical, chemical, electrical, fire and traffic hazards while operating maintenance equipment.


Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds.
