This position is responsible for operating a wide variety of assigned complex and heavy duty construction equipment associated with checking, installing, repairing, and maintaining city sewer lines, mains, man holes, and related components. Incumbents in this class are expected to perform their assigned duties with limited supervision, assigned advanced duties, and may be assigned responsibility for field direction of assigned crews in the absence of the Crew Leader. Operates assigned heavy duty motorized equipment to accomplish scheduled or emergency Utilities-Sewer Department construction, installation, repair, and maintenance projects, as well as a variety of assigned heavy duty motorized equipment including, small and large bull dozers, loaders, back hoes, track hoes, excavators, dump trucks, asphalt spreaders, concrete curb machines, bobcats, etc. Follows all safety rules associated with excavation, including but not limited to ensuring underground utility locates are complete before digging, digging safely respecting all locate marks, observing proper trench safety. Performs maintenance and minor/major repairs to exterior and underground sewer mains and lines. Performs new sewer line installations and replacements, additions, and alterations to existing sewer services. May supervise the work of other equipment operators and crew in the absence of the Crew Leader; Observes excavation work to ensure that underground sewer lines and mains are adequately protected. Reads and interprets work orders. Performs various laboring and skilled, unskilled, or semi-skilled tasks at work sites when not operating equipment. Responds to citizen questions and comments pertaining to work site projects. May perform traffic flagging duties at project sites to ensure a safe work environment. Maintains responsibility for assigned equipment or vehicle; cleans and washes assigned equipment and vehicles. Performs related duties.

Qualifications

Possession of a valid Georgia driver’s license. Knowledge of the city’s sewer system, and of the installation, repair, and maintenance of sewer services, mains, and other related system components. Knowledge of the methods, materials, and tools used in sewer line piping. Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of assigned motorized equipment, including, but is not limited to, small and large bull dozers, loaders, back hoes, track hoes, excavators, dump trucks, asphalt spreaders, concrete curb machines, bobcats, of motorized construction equipment, materials, and methods, of traffic hazards and traffic safety principles, practices, and procedures. Knowledge of departmental and city policies and procedures. Skill in locating sewer lines and mains, the operation of motorized equipment as applied to public utilities installation, repair, and maintenance projects, comprehending and following safety rules and regulations, training and coordinating the work of others, and communicating with others. Possession of a valid Georgia Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License or the ability to obtain within one (1) year of employment.

Miscellaneous Information

Work is performed while standing, sitting, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. Frequently lift light and heavy objects, use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity and distinguish between shades of color. Work is performed outdoors. Exposure to cold and inclement weather, chemicals, noise, dust, dirt, grease and machinery with moving parts. Work requires the use of protective devices such as goggles or gloves.
