The City of Duluth, Georgia (pop. 31,000) is accepting applications for the full-time position of ALCOHOL & EXCISE TAX OFFICER in the Business Office.  The normal work schedule is Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm.

Responsible for maintaining the city's alcohol licensing, training, and alcohol related permit records including applications, issuance, denial, and renewals. Also responsible for excise tax collections.

Also performs other general office duties including in-person customer service for the general public, answering the telephone, filing, and data entry. The employee needs to be able to work both independently as well as with the public and other tax officers. Good communication and customer service skills are essential for this position.


1.   A High School diploma, state-issued GED, or equivalent is required

-- An associate degree, a bachelor’s degree, certifications, or training from a recognized institution in accounting, bookkeeping, office technology, secretarial science, information systems, office administration, business administration, public administration, or a closely related area is desirable.

2.   Two-years work experience in customer service (by phone or in person), billing, or general clerical duties in an office environment is required

-- Experience in governmental alcohol and excise tax is highly preferred

3.   Written and/or spoken fluency in a foreign language (particularly Spanish or Korean) is desirable.

4.   All candidates are subject to a comprehensive background investigation.

Hiring range is $19.48 - $20.67 per hour (annualized $40,518 - $42,994 ; Grade 20). Starting salary is based on qualifications. A comprehensive package of fringe benefits is offered.
