Job Summary

The Building Official issues all building permits and inspects all phases of residential, commercial, and industrial construction work for compliance with applicable codes and ordinances. Additionally, the incumbent supervises the Protective Inspections Division of the Department of Planning and Development.


Essential Job Functions

  • Inspects all phases of commercial, industrial and residential construction;
  • Performs electrical, mechanical, plumbing, gas, footing, slab, setback, fire safety, and structural inspections for compliance with building codes and zoning regulations;
  • Makes final interpretation of City adopted building codes;
  • Issues all building permits, cell tower permits, demolition permits and solar permits;
  • Communicates with architects, engineers, technical personnel, builders, developers, and other clients concerning the construction plan review process, permitting and inspections;
  • Reviews plans, including schematic building and site drawings to ensure compliance with building, electrical, plumbing, gas, mechanical, life safety, fire, exits, accessibility, and other codes and ordinances;
  • Administers budget for the Protective Inspections Division;
  • Acts as immediate supervisor of the City Building Inspector. Ensures that contractors working in City are properly licensed;
  • Maintains files of inspections, re-inspections, notes, and required reports;
  • Compiles status reports on specific assignments as requested;
  • Performs assessment of structures and provides recommendation for condemnation and abatement;
  • Oversees and ensures that the City's Construction Board of Adjustments and Appeals is operating properly and all openings are filled by qualified citizens.


Minimum Qualifications

  • High School of Diploma;
  • Seven (7) years of experience in a related field;
  • Or equivalent training, education, and/or experience; and 
  • Valid State of Georgia Driver’s License;
  • Must possess a minimum of four (4) sections of I.C.C. Building Inspector Certification Modules (Building, Plumbing, Mechanical and Electrical Inspections).


Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications -

  • BOAG Level V, Certified Professional Building Official;
  • Associate’s degree in building construction or closely related field.
