Business License Compliance Officer

Augusta-Richmond County

Listing Summary


The purpose of this classification is to inspect existing businesses to ensure compliance with local ordinances, zoning ordinance, designated state codes, and business standards.  Reports to the Business License & Customer Service Manager, Depuity Director, or other designated person and works with business owners, court officials, board memebers, employees, and general public.


  • Conducts inspections of businesses to ensure proper licensure and taxation: makes site visits; researches and identifies businesses or other entities requiring business licensing; advises business owners of violations and actions needed to correct deviations; issues citations for violations as needed; and maintains related documentation.
  • Prepares renewal and delinquent notices for mailing maintains records of all communications sent to business owners; records amounts due; updates database to include renewals and fees received; and updates and maintains databases and associated documentation.
  • Provides information and assistance regarding business licensing, procedures, documentation, fees, or other issues; distributes forms and documentation; researches and responds to routine questions or complaints; and initiates problem resolution.
  • Ensures work activities are in compliance with applicable local, state, and federal rules, regulations, laws, codes, and ordinances: identifies problems and violations; and initiates problem resolution to correct deviations.


Required minimum qualifications:

Education:    High school diploma or GED is required

Experience:  Two (2) years of experience in processing business license applications

  • Basic understanding of Occupation Tax Code
  • Considerable knowledge of county codes, legal processes, construction or trade codes, zoning, and other related codes
  • Microsoft Office Suite proficiency
  • Proficiency in tracing ownership of buildings and/or land, performing inspections and extensive investigative work related to all ordinances and codes, reading maps, charts, and computerized databases
  • Mastery of operating standard office equipment and computers 
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to speak at public meetings when necessary
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently
  • Demonstrated ability to work with the public and provide extraordinary customer service


  • Possession of a valid driver's license with good driving history.  If State license is other than Georgia or South Carolina, applicant must obtain a license in Georgia or South Carolina within 30 days of employment.
