This position works closely with Finance Staff to provide accounting support for the city’s financial operations.  Assists in year-end account analysis and closings. Position requires independent judgement, discretion, excellent organization skills and ability to interpret and explain complex information. Must be able to meet deadlines and performs related duties as assigned. Handles confidential files and materials. Reviews completed documentation for accuracy of coding and completeness of information. Provides support and information to finance staff. Assists with daily cash management. Serves as a liaison with appropriate banking officers in resolving issues regarding cash management.   Reconciles bank accounts and other accounts. Creates industrial customer invoices. Reviews and reconciles subsidiary ledgers and prepares adjustments as needed to the general ledger. Assists with budget preparations and the annual audit. Assists with accounting records and ledgers by reconciling monthly statement and transactions. Performs some grant accounting and grant financial reporting Reviews purchases and assists with accounting and reporting of fixed assets. Answers questions and advises all departments regarding accounting and budget adjustments. Performs backup duties to other jobs in the finance department. Performs all other financial accounting duties as assigned. The purpose of this position is to provide accounting support for the city’s financial operation. The work consists of related clerical duties. Extensive use of PC, spreadsheets and word processing applications; use of calculator and maintaining accurate records.  

 

Qualifications

Four-year college degree with major in Accounting. Two years of accounting, auditing, purchasing or related experience. Municipal government accounting/finance experience preferred. Must pass background investigation and credit check. Knowledge of advanced governmental accounting principles and procedures Ability to plan and organize data; check data for accuracy Ability to explain complex financial information to others Experienced in dealing with diverse types of individuals. Knowledge of computers and job related software programs. Excellent in oral and written skills.

The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, filing, bending, crouching or stooping.
