Listing Summary

Under the general direction of the Park Operations Manager, the employee will direct a small crew of workers in the construction, maintenance, landscape, beautification and repair of City buildings, streets, grounds, and facilities.  Work in this class is distinguished from higher classes by its emphasis on knowledge and abilities in skilled work and from lower classes by its supervisory responsibilities with room for advancement.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

• Supervises, plans, and coordinates work of Crew Leaders and/or crews of primarily skilled workers, or of a larger-sized crew (2 to 4) of primarily service workers performing a variety of maintenance, landscape and construction activities
• Supervises construction of new facilities and major renovations to existing facilities
• Assign crews to work projects, transfers workers from one project to another as workload changes, coordinates the use of available equipment, checks each project for conformance
• Conducts regular and periodic performance reviews of subordinates
• Provides significant input in all decisions affecting hiring, firing, and disciplining of subordinates
• Inspects project work for compliance with plans, performance standards, and all applicable federal, state, local, and department safety regulations
• Estimates and orders materials for work
• Oversees planting, propagation, maintenance, and care of lawns, shrubbery, trees, and flowers 
• Supervises and assists in maintenance and cleaning of buildings
• Supervises maintenance, lining, and policing of athletic fields 
• Conducts accident investigations
• Provides training and instruction to subordinates
• Keeps records of labor and materials 
• Tracks, verifies, and approves subordinate time worked to supervisor
• Required to respond under emergency conditions
