Job Summary:  This position is responsible for driving a refuse truck along a residential route to collect refuse within the City of Cartersville.

Major Duties:

• Inspects the truck prior to leaving on route to ensure that it is properly cleaned, serviced and equipped.
• Drives a refuse truck along a predetermined residential route to collect refuse; transfers refuse to landfill.
• Empties refuse into truck.
• Operates a two-way radio.
• Performs minor preventative maintenance and repairs on the truck, such as checking air pressure, brakes, lights, belts, and fluid levels; cleans and washes truck; informs supervisor of vehicle repair needs.
• Assists other department crews and drivers with leaf and limb removal duties, as needed.
• Collects discarded items, yard waste, and junk from curb sides and streets.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

• Knowledge of the geographic layout of the city.
• Knowledge of residential refuse collection routes.
• Knowledge of departmental and safety rules and regulations.
• Knowledge of the operation of the truck and related equipment.
• Skill in defensive driving techniques.
• Skill in oral and written communication.

Qualifications:

• Possession of a valid Commercial driver's license (CDL-B) issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated
• Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations.
• Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
