POSITION TITLE:              Electric Groundman Non-exempt

 

REPORTS TO:                     Electric Senior Foreman

 

JOB SUMMARY:

Under general supervision is responsible for performing a variety of duties involved in installing, maintaining and repairing power distribution lines.

 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for operating and/or training others in operating a variety of equipment such as bucket truck, front end loader, backhoe, trencher, high pressure cleaning equipment, digger derrick, mini x, etc.
  • Dig ditches to bury conductors.
  • Assist in installing and removing transformers, switches, regulators and other electrical apparatus. 
  • Perform preassembly of apparatus on the ground for installation by linemen.
  • Provide support to lineman on poles by sending material to lineman by hand lines or other equipment.
  • Assists in installing underground conductors.
  • Load and unload poles, transformers, etc.  Makes certain trucks are properly stocked and tools and equipment properly placed.  When job is complete, ensure that material is properly returned to warehouse.
  • As required, conduct daily vehicle or equipment maintenance including checking for fluid levels, fluid leaks, and proper tire pressure.  Report malfunctions or repairs needed to appropriate authority.
  • As required, operate tractor and power mower to maintain the appearance of utility property.
  • Responsible for working in a safe manner following safe work procedures.
  • Responsible for the proper use and care of tools and equipment; ensure that the tools/equipment are properly maintained and that the required repairs are properly reported.
  • Must have a phone and be available for “on call” duty, special trouble calls and overtime as necessary.
  • As a public employee, responsible for maintaining good relations with the public served.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • The work requires some physical exertions, such as walking across rugged terrain, lifting cross arms, x-braces, and associated hardware with assistance of cranes, and the use of hand-held power tools. 
  • The work may require specific, but common, physical characteristics and abilities such as above-average agility and dexterity.
  • The physical requirements of the job require the ability to lift 50 pounds and, on those occasions, where lifting requirements may be higher, employee is required to notify supervisor of the need for assistance.
  • Vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work involves high risks situations or unusual environmental stress, such as working with high-voltage electrical equipment, extreme outdoor weather conditions, and emergency situations at all hours of the day, and any day. 
  • Normal working hours (7:30 AM – 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday) are expected; however, employee may be subject to call-outs at all times to perform emergency work and is encouraged to establish permanent residence within 15 miles of the service area.

 

MINIMAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.
  • CDL license required within 6 months of employment.
  • Possess demonstrable skills and be a team player.
  • Possess good reading, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Possess the ability to interface with customers and internal personnel.
