JOB SUMMARY

This position, under the supervision of the on duty Captain,  is responsible for responding to emergency calls and suppressing fires, stabilizing incidents, conserving property and preserving lives.

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Responds to calls for first responders, in emergency situations and in cases of fire.
  • Drives fire apparatus to and from scenes; maintains adequate water supply for fire suppression.
  • Provides search and rescue services, extrications, hazardous materials management and emergency medical care.
  • Prepares incident reports.
  • Performs scheduled fire station cleaning and maintenance duties. 
  • Inspects, tests, and repairs fire equipment, protective gear, and fire apparatus.
  • Maintains City fire hydrants annually.
  • Attends regular training activities.
  • Conducts public educational events and classes.
  • Performs related duties.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Knowledge of federal, state and local fire codes and ordinances.
  • Knowledge of fire behavior.
  • Knowledge of fire suppression practices, tactics, and safety techniques.
  • Knowledge of first responder principles and applications.
  • Knowledge of hazardous materials management.
  • Knowledge of computers and job related software programs.
  • Skill in the use of light and heavy specialized firefighting equipment.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in interpersonal communication.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include City policies and procedures, department standard operating procedures, and applicable state and federal laws and codes. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of related firefighting duties. The necessity of responding to potentially dangerous situations contributes to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to prevent and suppress fires and respond to emergency calls. Successful performance ensures the protection of life, property, and public safety.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes sense of smell.
  • The work is typically performed in an office and occasionally at emergency scenes and outdoors in cold and inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, contagious or infectious diseases, and extremely high heat and smoke conditions. The work requires the use of specialized equipment and protective devices.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

This position has direct supervision over assigned Auxiliary/Paid per call Firefighters.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the National Fire Protection Association and the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Act..
