Parks & Recreation Assistant Camp Director

Job Summary/objective:

The Assistant Camp Director shall oversee the welfare and safety of the campers and will assist in the hiring of qualified counselors, organizing and planning field trips, designating responsibilities and supervising the counselors, and handling discipline of campers when necessary.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Assigns daily tasks for the camp staff.
  • Assists with hiring, training, and onboarding of camp staff.
  • Ensures that all staff and campers adhere to the policies and procedures set forth by the Parks and Recreation Department and other applicable policies.
  • Leads staff meetings throughout the summer.
  • Facilitates camp staff training.

 

 

 

 

Essential Function and Duties/Responsibilities:

 

  • Acts as Camp Director in the absence of Camp Director
  • Assist director in staff training and evaluation including mid and final performance reviews.
  • City vehicle operation and driving responsibilities to transport passengers, travel to meetings, conferences, events, park visits, and other daily operations. 
  • Follow assigned duties from Camp Director
  • Plans organizes and facilitates staff meetings.
  • Assists Camp Director in preparation of bi-weekly time reports.
  • Assists director and coordinate with Activity Leads in logistical set-up and clean-up of camp including group area/location assignment and schedule.
  • Monitor cleanliness of facility and ensure that routine daily cleaning is performed by staff.
  • Assist Camp Director with field trip planning and coordination as needed.
  • Oversee the planning of age-appropriate games, crafts, and activities for campers ages 5-12
  • Prepares accident/incident reports as needed and follows established procedures for reporting accidents/incidents.
  • Handle medical, safety, and severe weather emergencies per the procedures noted in the camp staff manual and during in-service training.
  • Completes needed reports and submits them to the appropriate party.
  • Schedules and conducts parent conferences as needed.
  • Maintains positive relationships with parents, campers, and staff.
  • Assists Camp Director in keeping financial payment and attendance records for each week of camp.
  • Oversees the daily operations of recreational facilities.
  • Plans and leads activities such as arts, crafts, sports, games, camping, and hobbies.
  • Enforces camp rules and regulations and ensures safety in the recreational facilities.
  • Performs first aid following prescribed procedures and contacts emergency medical personnel when required by the situation.
  • Demonstrates use of recreational equipment and teaches participants the principles, techniques, and safety procedures for each activity.
  • Greets new arrivals and introduces them to other campers; explains camp and facility rules.
  • Reports camper complaints to leadership and works to resolve issues.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

 

 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

 

  • Ability to be on your feet for 7-hour shift.
  • To be able to work outdoors in the parks.
  • Must be able to work the following schedule below.
    • Shifts are scheduled between 6:30 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. (Monday – Friday)
    • Camp Season: Winter, Spring, or Summer (specific dates TBD)
    • Mandatory Training Dates:  as needed, prior to start of camp (10 a.m. – 6 p.m.)
  • Enthusiastic and positive attitude.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to learn and enforce the camps’ safety and operating rules.
  • Must attend staff meetings and orientation.

 

Education, Credentials, Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by 5+ years previous Camp Supervisory Experience.
  • Or Post-Secondary education and/or specialized training which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position and general camp experience, and 2+ years Camp Supervisory Experience.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR/AED (American Heart Association or American Red Cross). The City of Tucker will offer First Aid and CPR/AED training to the selected candidate. Certifications must be valid through the employment period.
  • Must have a valid Georgia Driver's License, with a clear MVR
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment background check and drug screening required.
  • Knowledge in sports, STEAM, outdoor education and arts and crafts.
  • Previous experience working with children.

 

 

 

 

Physical Characteristics:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times. 
  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects and climbs ladders.
  • Able to participate in games, sports, and physical activities including water-based games and activities.
  • Able to maintain attention and high level of energy or excitement for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to spend majority the of time outdoors and tolerate a variety of weather conditions.

 

Environmental Factors:

  • The work is typically performed in an office or outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, and occasional cold or inclement weather.
