JOB SUMMARY:
Performs work involving the operation of equipment at landfill or road maintenance and construction sites; operates machinery in covering and packing garbage; performs slope work; performs safety checks and basic equipment maintenance tasks; performs associated labor duties at assigned worksites; maintains a safe and sanitary environment.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (All responsibilities may not be performed by all incumbents.)

Operates bulldozer to push trash, cover trash; fills or cuts areas to grade.

Maintains landfill grounds; pulls slops, fills in washes, keeps ditches open and piles up brush.

Operates trash compactor to push and compact trash.

Operates bulldozer to finish final grading work.

Performs safety checks of all assigned equipment.

Performs other related work as required.

MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT USED:
Bulldozer, Scraper, Trash Compactor, Front-End Loader, Motor Grader, Backhoe

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: All candidates to fill a vacant position in this classification must submit to and pass a drug-screening test after meeting the following minimum requirements:

Education and Experience: High School diploma or GED; and, One to two years of progressively responsible related experience; or, Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

Licenses and Certifications: Valid Driver's License Satisfactory (3 year) motor vehicle report. For positions assigned to the Landfill, Certified Landfill Operator desirable or ability to be certified within six months of employment. (If certified when hired, may start at step 2 of salary range.)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of:
Principles and practices of general maintenance and repairs of equipment.
Basic construction practices.
Basic landfill operations and maintenance.
EPA and OSHA regulations for the operation of landfills.
Operation and maintenance of various types of landfill and/or construction and maintenance equipment.

Skill in:
Operating assigned equipment.
Performing routine maintenance on equipment.

Mental and Physical Abilities to:
Diagnose and repair basic defects in motorized equipment.
Establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with the public and other employees.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
Operate and maintain all assigned equipment.
While performing the essential functions of this job, the incumbent is regularly required to lift and/or move 20 to 50 pounds of force; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; reach with hands and arms; and use hands to finger, handle, or feel.

Working Conditions:
Frequent exposure of work time to dirt, dust, extremes of temperature, and noxious fumes and odors.
Exposure of work time to moderate work hazards when operating heavy equipment.
Exposed to hazards associated with equipment, machinery and upgraded terrain.
While performing the essential functions of this job, the incumbent is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions; shaking objects or surfaces; conditions such as fumes, noxious odors, dusts, mists, and gases, and moving mechanical parts of equipment, tools, or machinery.
The incumbent's working conditions are typically loud.
