General Description and Classification Standards

The purpose of this job is to provide a variety of GIS and System administrative support tasks related to creating and maintaining the City of Atlanta Department of City Planning (DCP) GIS enterprise. Designs, develops, modifies, debugs and evaluates programs for GIS systems. This is the Senior level for this job family. This is a fully seasoned professional level capable of independently carrying out most assignments typical of the profession.                                                    

Supervision Received

Works under very general supervision. Depending on organization structure, may work independently with responsibility for an assigned function or program.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities  These are typical responsibilities for this position and should not be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.  May perform other duties as assigned.

  • Provide technical assistance, training, and policy guidance as a subject-matter expert on the ESRI product line: ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and other ArcGIS Apps products
  • Support of the automation of data collection, conversion, troubleshooting, and maintenance of our Enterprise GIS environment.
  • Carries out GIS system design, modification, or updates for GIS environments. 
  • Commonly leads a project team in planning and executing GIS implementations. 
  • Recommends changes in development, maintenance, and system standards. 
  • Develop and execute data conversion and creation of procedures that support migrations between systems and databases
  • Web publishing of map/image services to ArcGIS server; Python scripting; geospatial data management system architecture/design.
  • Develop and implement data models, database designs, and table maintenance scripts; managing geodatabase replication
  • Working closely with business units on developing and applying suitable GIS solutions to aid strategic decisions
  • Work closely with GIS Manager to develop and improve business processes
  • Performs quality control on the attribute information.

  • Ability to work independently and use good judgment in routine and non-routine situations

Selects from multiple procedures and methods to accomplish tasks.  Establishes work methods, timetables, performance standards, etc.

Leadership Provided

Routinely provides work group leadership, guidance, and/or training to less experienced staff. Acts as team lead on large projects.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities This is a partial listing of necessary knowledges, skills, and abilities required to perform the job successfully.  It is not an exhaustive list.

Knowledge of ESRI suite of GIS solution and tools including ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Pro, and ArcGIS Online; Background in Accela GIS, Python, SQL; understanding of data modeling and general knowledge of parcel maintenance and land-based data.

Minimum Qualifications – Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in GIS, geography, computer science or engineering (equivalent professional experience may be considered for substitution for the required degree on an exception basis).

5 years of specific GIS work experience.

Preferred Education & Experience

The ideal candidate will possess progressive experience in ESRI ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro, 3D City Engine, and Accela GIS. Programming is strongly desired.
