Airport Safety Officer

The purpose of this classification is to perform routine and emergency response duties in law enforcement and aircraft rescue and firefighting, while providing security for airport customers, tenants, facilities and equipment.

Duties

Operates airport emergency vehicles during responses to aircraft rescue/firefighting emergencies; performs rescue/firefighting tasks at aircraft emergencies and mishaps; operates specialized equipment for rescue operations.

Operates airport vehicles and equipment to provide mutual aid/support to area fire departments.

Administers first aid when necessary.

Performs salvage, overhaul, and scene preservation duties at aircraft and structural emergencies.

Responds to law enforcement incidents and emergencies on airport property which includes passenger screening alarms and aircraft operating area intrusions; investigates law enforcement incidents, emergencies and vehicle accidents on airport property.

Enforces traffic laws and investigates incidents, emergencies and accidents on airport property; performs security patrols.

Observes and reports unsafe activities and conditions; performs airfield and fuel facility safety inspections; reports and documents discrepancies.

Issues, documents, and cancels airport advisories.

Monitors activities in and around airport terminals during periods of commercial flight activity; opens and closes terminals at the beginning and end of each day.

Inspects, cleans, and performs operator level maintenance on assigned vehicles and equipment.

Prepares a variety of reports, logs, inspection results, and related documents; posts and/or forwards to supervisor.

Follows training schedules; receives and conducts training; maintains personal training record; attends schools and training courses as directed.

Maintains firefighting and law enforcement certifications; qualifies with department issued firearm on state approved course of fire.

Performs miscellaneous administrative and phone watch duties.

Operates communication equipment on police, fire, and aviation frequencies.

Performs general clean up and maintenance tasks for station and airfield facilities.



ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required; additionally, two (2) years previous experience in law enforcement, aviation safety, aircraft firefighting or related field preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver's license. Must obtain and maintain law enforcement/P.O.S.T. certification. Must obtain and maintain N.P.Q. Firefighter 1 certification within one year of hire. Must attain Airport Firefighter certification within 60 days after completing N.P.Q. Firefighting 1 certification. Will be required to obtain Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certifications during orientation period.
