Accounting Assistant


Listing Summary

A position for an Accounting Assistant is currently available in the Administrative Services Division. This position is responsible for providing accounting support to the Administrative Services Division. This is a permanent, full-time position. This is a Class 12 position with a beginning pay of $17.12 per hour. 

Some of the major duties include but are not limited to: 

  • Processes accounts payable to include: (70%)
    • Reviews all purchase orders and invoices for accuracy and completeness.
    • Matches invoices to receiving records and purchase orders; processes check requests.
    • Sorts and reviews vouchers, invoices, and check requests.
    • Processes vendor forms and invoices for all city departments.
    • Responds to payment inquiries from vendors.
    • Maintains vendor files.
    • Stuffs envelopes and mails checks.
    • Balances accounts payable to general ledger.
    • Prepares accounts payable reports.
  • Processes payroll. (10%)
  • Assists with human resources support for city operations. (5%)
  • Assists with insurance and retirement benefits for employees. (5%)
  • Performs related duties. (10%)

Knowledge Required by the Position:

  • Knowledge of basic accounting and bookkeeping.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft WORD and EXCEL.
  • Knowledge of city and department policies and procedures.  
  • Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
  • Skill in maintaining accurate records.
  • Skill in preparing reports.
  • Skill in performing mathematical calculations.
  • Skill in establishing priorities and organizing work.
  • Skill in operating a computer, copier, calculator, and facsimile machine.
  • Skill in dealing with the public.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

Required Minimum qualifications:  

Associate Degree in a related field with 2 years work experience. Proficiency with computers and accounting software, strong typing skills. Familiarity with basic accounting principles. Professional manner and a strong ethical code. Ability to multitask and remain motivated and positive. Commitment to working efficiently and accurately. Selected candidates will be required to pass a background check, have a valid driver’s license, and the ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening.
