Essential Functions:

Supervises and manages interaction with news media; responds to news media directly, or advises employees on responses; attends events where media is present to ensure fair and accurate coverage; writes or edits news releases; represents department as a spokesperson; and monitors news for impacts.
Supervises and manages interaction with public; responds to public inquiries; manages ongoing interactions such as complaints or ombudsman work; and ensures department projects the desired image to the public.
Creates print and online content; produces and publishes content for newsletters, brochures, flyers; monitors and creates content for social media and the department website; takes photos of staff and events; and writes or edits official department announcements, speeches, or formal letters.
Arranges and promotes outreach events; secures locations, dates, and sponsorship needed for community outreach events; plans activities and materials for events; recruits and supervises event volunteers; and coordinates staff and materials needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Public Relations, or Communication; seven years of progressively responsible experience in public relations or communications; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Specific License or Certification Required: Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.

The ideal candidate will:
Create and implement a proactive and robust media relations strategy that produces a positive public awareness for the DeKalb County Police Department
Serve as the public relations contact for the police department while coordinating major media inquiries through the CEO's office of communication
Working with the police chief and CEO to determine appropriate spokesperson from the department to effectively convey information based on the nature of the issue to foster transparency and public trust
Assist with crisis management including but not limited to preparing talking points for police chief and/or other members of county administration
Ensure consistent and effective messaging across multiple modes of communication (i.e., TV, radio, email, flyers, social media, etc.).
Develop and implement creative and impactful public relations strategies to engage and inform the community about the police department's initiatives, programs, and events
Lead in the creation and implementation of public relations and communications programs that promote strategic objectives set fourth by county leadership
Monitor social media platforms and engage with the public, addressing questions, concerns, and providing accurate information
Stay up to date with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in public relations and community engagement
Be available for on-call duty with weekend and evening responsibilities.
